Samsung C460FW, Printer, Scanner, Copier and Fax machine Review
Powered by a S33MHz processor the Samsung C460FW is a multi-function device offering print, scan, copy and fax functionality. Forming the base of this product is a colour laser printer with an A4 flatbed scanner and ADF (automatic document feeder) module mounted on top. Rather substantial in appearance with dimensions of 406 x 362 x 333.5 mm. this four toner cartridge device will require some extra room as the rear mounted power connection juts out a little and space is also required for the paper input and output trays at the front. The product's control panel is on a lip protruding from just below the scanner.

A 6 x 1cm, two-line monochrome LCD window provides feedback as to status and menu options. On the right side of this panel are four large buttons for Stop/ Clear. Power/Wake Up. Black and Color tasks. Other buttons including those for the alphanumeric telephone keypad are rather small.

Almost hidden by the control panel is a USB port. In order to gain access to this port you need to raise the top module. You might also find that the same module will need to be raised if you encounter a paper jam. You can print documents stored on an inserted flash drive or use it to save scans.

The paper input and output trays protrude from the front of the printer. According to Samsung the output tray has a capacity of 50 sheets but I found paper was scattered over the floor long before this figure was reached. The input tray initially flush to the printer will need to be extended before it can hold A4 paper up to a capacity of 150 sheets Setting up this unit gives you a choice of USB. Ethernet and wireless connectivity. When integrating the C460FW into your network a wizard will lead you through the process.

According to this procedure you should have a choice of opting for a direct setup or one that involves using a USB lead for the initial stages. Unfortunately the wizard would not let me select the direct method and I was forced to use the USB approach which was rather slow when it came to identifying possible networks. Appropriate drivers and a choice of software are available for installation.

The unit's fax feature supports automatic redialing message forwarding and multiple sends, plus adjustments to the darkness resolution and size of faxes. With support for both TWAIN and WIA the A4 flatbed scanner has an optical resolution of 600 x 600dpi which can be enhanced up to 4800 x 4800dpi.

Speed-wise the C460FW performance should not disappoint. An A4 color scan was printed in 23 seconds with a printed monochrome scan needing just eight seconds. Basic print runs for A4 documents were measured at 19ppm monochrome and 4.25ppm colour. A ten-page document printed two pages per side was completed in 34 seconds while a second ten-page document was copied in 45 seconds using the ADF module.

As is becoming increasingly popular the C460FW supports NFC technology allowing you to set up a link for printing from a mobile device. This feature requires a free Samsung app to be installed on your smartphone or tablet.

A quick check of the internet reveals that a pack of the four toner cartridges is available for 86.99.
