Why are my Desktop icons freezing?

My Windows 7 Desktop icons have started freezing. They just won't respond. Does anyone know why this might be happening and what I can do about it? It's very annoying.

Do you remember downloading anything just before this started happening? It's worth running a malware check with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free (www.malwarebytes.org) in case you've picked up an infection. Also, check Event Viewer for clues to why this started happening. Event Viewer is a built-in Windows tool that records significant events on your computer, such as when programs don't start as expected. To open it, go to Control Panel, click 'System and Security', click Administrative Tools and double-click Event Viewer. Type your administrator password if prompted . It may also be that your icon cache has become corrupted, so try restoring it by going to the Windows 7 forums at http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials...e-rebuild.html and downloading the free cache-rebuilding software.

If all else fails, follow the advice in an old discussion about freezing icons on the Microsoft Forums, where they recommend a clean boot of your computer (http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/w...d-2f9fb14323ba). If you decide to do this, first read the Microsoft Support article at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135. The advice applies to Windows Vista and 8, as well as 7.
